Palazzo Velabro
Contemporary art hotel meets Roman history — cerebral and design-forward, not glitzy. The owners want you to leave feeling like a Roman resident, not a tourist. Intellectual library shelves, a six-seat private cinema, art on every wall, and a terrace with uninterrupted views of the Imperial Forum.
The entrance is tricky — taxis drop you near steps; take the left-hand steps and enter through Apicio 16 to reach the lobby
Why It Matters
One of very few hotels in Rome where you can wake up to a direct view of the Roman Forum and Arch of Janus. It's also legitimately a cultural space — cinema screenings daily, rotating gallery exhibitions, and a restaurant named after ancient Rome's most famous cookbook author. Part of Design Hotels (and by extension Marriott Bonvoy).
Palazzo Velabro sits on the exact strip of land where legend says Romulus and Remus first washed ashore — right next to the Arch of Janus in one of Rome's oldest neighborhoods. The 18th-century building was given a striking second life by architect Luigi Moretti in 1960, whose signature dramatic curves still define the interiors. Today it operates as a 32-room boutique hotel, with a palette of sage green, brick pink, and cobalt blue running through rooms dressed in breccia marble, walnut boiserie, and custom furniture by Italian brand Quinti. The lobby vault was hand-frescoed by painter Edoardo Piermattei, and rotating contemporary art exhibitions curated by art expert Maria Vittoria Baravelli keep the place feeling alive.

How you'll actually spend your days.
A six-seat private cinema tucked inside the hotel. Daily screenings of classic and curated films at 3pm, 6pm, and 9pm. Tickets include a drink and popcorn. The whole room can be exclusively reserved for private gatherings or business events. Italy has one of the richest film traditions in the world, and the programming leans into that.
A creatively stocked library with books on art (Caravaggio through to contemporary), Rome's cinematographic history, and Italian culture. Armchairs designed by Patricia Urquiola for Moroso. Good for rainy afternoons or pre-gallery research.
The lobby vault and common spaces host rotating exhibitions curated by art expert Maria Vittoria Baravelli. Past shows include work by Ettore Spalletti. The lobby itself was frescoed by painter Edoardo Piermattei, whose watercolors link Rome's river identity to the building's mythological origins.
Bike rentals available nearby for cycling along the Tiber River paths and around Rome's ancient sites.
An intimate boardroom-style meeting room with classic decor, suitable for small business meetings, presentations, or private dinners. Audiovisual setup available.
