Palazzo Tiglio
Tuscan aristocratic residence meets genuine family hospitality. Frescoed ceilings, antique furniture, and Ortigia bath products — but no stuffiness. Guests share a Piano Nobile lounge with an honesty bar and open fire. The vibe is relaxed, romantic, and decidedly unhurried.

Why It Matters
One of the few genuinely restored historic palazzi operating as a hotel in Tuscany's under-visited Valdambra valley. Michelin-listed hotel with a restaurant that has won Historic Hotels of Europe Top Hotel Restaurant Gold (2023) and Silver (2024) awards. Member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, Historic Hotels of Europe, HIP Hotels, and Historic Hotels in Italy.
A seven-room family-run hotel inside a 17th-century noble palazzo perched on a hilltop in the tiny Tuscan hamlet of San Pancrazio. Owner John Werich has restored the building with genuine antique furniture, original parquet floors, and a gourmet restaurant helmed by executive chef Mattia Parlanti. It's small — intimately so — with a walled rose garden, an above-ground pool, and views over the Valdambra valley that reward the winding 6km drive up to get here.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Summer aperitivo evenings run at both La Cantinetta (on the village piazza) and at L'Orto Bar in the walled garden on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Local wines, Aperol Spritz, Campari Soda, cheese and charcuterie platters — with valley views as a backdrop.
Each year the hotel curates art exhibitions by internationally acclaimed artists with Tuscan connections inside the 13th-century village church directly opposite the palazzo. Past artists include Nathalie Edenmont, Jeroen Henneman, Christiane Perrochon, and Liselotte Watkins.
Palazzo Tiglio is a founding member and main contributor to La Filarmonica, a historic 1920 concert hall 200 metres from the hotel. The hall is reopening in summer 2026 with a season of chamber music by internationally acclaimed musicians. Check lafilarmonica.org for the programme.
The grand lounge on the Piano Nobile is available to all guests. Library books, comfortable armchairs, a crackling fire in cooler months, and an honesty bar stocked with drinks. A good spot to decompress after a day of exploring.
Exclusive to hotel guests. A walled garden adjacent to the palazzo with a 3x6m above-ground pool, sun loungers on the lawn, a formal rose garden with fountain, shady pergolas, and the organic kitchen garden. It's a small pool — a dip, not laps — but the setting is lovely.
Held in the historic palazzo kitchen studio with trained chef Francesca Lari. Starts with a coffee at La Cantinetta, then guests collect fresh herbs from the kitchen garden before preparing a three-course lunch of typical Tuscan dishes — handmade pasta, focaccia, and seasonal produce. Lunch is enjoyed on the terrace or in the garden with a glass of local wine.
Led by professional sommelier Danilo Salvi in the kitchen studio. Covers a flight of Tuscan and Italian wines — from Chianti to Brunello — from local wineries, accompanied by small bites from the kitchen. Typically done in the afternoon before dinner.
