Palazzo Ducale Venturi
Aristocratic Italian palazzo hotel. Serious history (Templar settlement, then medieval fortress, then ducal residence), beautifully restored. Quiet, intimate, and family-run in feeling. Think stone arches, antique furniture, and candlelit underground pools — not minimalist Scandi luxury.
The Junior Suite della Badessa is the most characterful room in the building: a private rooftop terrace and tiny stone spiral staircase make it worth requesting specifically
Why It Matters
One of the first ducal residences in Salento converted to a hotel, with a restoration unusually faithful to the original thanks to direct cultural authority oversight. The underground spa pool — carved from an ancient hypogeum oil mill — is a genuinely rare find. Legend has it the Duke Venturi built a secret underground tunnel to his lover, the Abbess of the nearby convent; the palace's history and mythology are woven into every room name.
A 16th-century ducal palace in the quiet inland village of Minervino di Lecce, about 40 minutes south of Lecce city. The restoration was overseen by Italy's Superintendence of Cultural Heritage — so the original star vaults in Leccese stone, ancient chianche floors, and two uncovered salt ovens are the genuine article, not theatrical props. Twenty rooms spread across the main palazzo and a historic armory building beside the saltwater pool, all done up with period antiques, frescoes, and real aristocratic flair. Not on the sea, and doesn't pretend to be.
