Why It Matters
One of a tiny handful of genuine historic palacetes operating as a boutique hotel in central Lisbon. The building's original architectural elements — 700-year-old Pombaline tiles, intense stained glass, Brazilian Art Nouveau woodwork — were preserved through a meticulous three-year restoration. A six-suite mansion in the heart of Alfama built in 1909 by João Antonio Santos — a Lisbon native who returned flush from Brazil and wanted everyone to know it. The exterior is neo-Moorish; step inside and you get a layered mix of Brazilian Art Nouveau, Neo-Baroque, and Neoclassical, with original stained glass windows and 700-year-old tiles still in situ. The Unlock Boutique Hotels group has restored it carefully, keeping the common rooms — a wood-panelled library, Salon of Mirrors, Salon Arabé, Salon Caça — as the real stars. Faces the alleys of Alfama rather than the river, so the view is medieval rooftops and cobblestones rather than the Tagus. Two comfortable beds dressed in pure cotton sheets, period-style furniture, and a private bathroom. The quieter pick if you want neighbourhood atmosphere over river panoramas.

The flagship room. Spans three floors of the palacete, with the highest level fitted with a telescope so you can properly take in the 360° panorama of Lisbon and the Tagus below.
