Palacete Chafariz D'El Rei
Opulent historic palacete with a lived-in, aristocratic-house feel. Art, film, and fashion crowd. Intimate — you'll likely have the salons to yourself.
Book the Luxury Suite River View if budget allows — the top-floor telescope room with 360° views is genuinely special
Why It Matters
One of a tiny handful of genuine historic palacetes operating as a boutique hotel in central Lisbon. The building's original architectural elements — 700-year-old Pombaline tiles, intense stained glass, Brazilian Art Nouveau woodwork — were preserved through a meticulous three-year restoration. Holds Biosphere sustainability certification and a Luxury Lifestyle Award (2020).
A six-suite mansion in the heart of Alfama built in 1909 by João Antonio Santos — a Lisbon native who returned flush from Brazil and wanted everyone to know it. The exterior is neo-Moorish; step inside and you get a layered mix of Brazilian Art Nouveau, Neo-Baroque, and Neoclassical, with original stained glass windows and 700-year-old tiles still in situ. The Unlock Boutique Hotels group has restored it carefully, keeping the common rooms — a wood-panelled library, Salon of Mirrors, Salon Arabé, Salon Caça — as the real stars. Six suites, no pool, no spa, no gym. But direct Tagus River views from the upper floors, and one of the best signature brunches in central Lisbon.
