Palace Hotel, a Luxury Collection Hotel, San Francisco
Old World grandeur with polished modern service. California Impressionism-inspired textiles, 11-foot ceilings, monogrammed brass doorknobs, and Frette linens throughout. Historic without feeling stuffy — locals come here for Afternoon Tea and cocktails at the Pied Piper as much as guests do.
Book Afternoon Tea well in advance — it sells out, especially on weekends and holidays
Why It Matters
Originally established in 1875 as San Francisco's first premier luxury hotel and the largest in the world. Has hosted Woodrow Wilson, Warren G. Harding, Nikita Khrushchev, and been used as a film location from Disney movies to David Fincher. The Maxfield Parrish mural at Pied Piper — a 16-by-6-foot, 250-pound painting commissioned to celebrate the hotel's 1909 reopening — is one of San Francisco's most significant artworks. The Green Goddess dressing was invented here in 1923.
The Palace is San Francisco's original grand luxury hotel, open since 1875 and rebuilt after the 1906 earthquake into the 9-story Beaux-Arts landmark standing today. The crown jewel is the Garden Court — a soaring glass-domed dining room framed by Italian marble pillars and Austrian crystal chandeliers that genuinely stops first-time visitors in their tracks. Over 550 rooms, two of the city's most storied restaurants, an indoor pool under a glass skylight, and a lobby-level history museum round out a property that's equal parts hotel and San Francisco institution.

An exclusive package pairing a Palace stay with a journey aboard the Napa Valley Wine Train — gourmet dining, heritage vineyards, and luxury rail travel. Bookable via Marriott.
