One Aldwych
Understated modern British luxury with genuine cultural edge — part private members' club, part neighbourhood institution. Contemporary interiors by Fabled Studio and Robert Angell sit on top of the building's original Art Nouveau curves. Warm, residential, and independent in spirit.
The Lobby Bar's Gallery cocktail menu is directly inspired by the hotel's art collection — ask your bartender about the piece that inspired your drink
Why It Matters
London's first and only five-star hotel to hold B Corp certification (achieved 2024). Recipient of a Michelin Key (2024 and 2025). Voted in Condé Nast Traveller's top 20 London hotels in 2025. Fully independent — no chain, no brand playbook. The building was designed by the same architects as The Ritz. The chlorine-free pool sits exactly where the Morning Post's printing presses once ran.
One Aldwych is a genuinely independent, 5-star B Corp hotel occupying a Grade II-listed Edwardian building on the Strand-Aldwych junction in Covent Garden. Built in 1905 by the architects behind The Ritz (Mewès & Davis) as the headquarters of the Morning Post newspaper, it opened as a hotel in 1998 and has quietly earned a reputation as one of London's most characterful properties — not because of a parent company's marketing budget, but because it owns its personality. Art Nouveau bones, a 400-piece private art collection, a chlorine-free swimming pool where the printing presses used to run, and a restaurant that is entirely gluten and dairy-free. It's the kind of place that does unusual things with conviction.

A lap pool located where the Morning Post's printing presses once ran — one of the hotel's most singular features. Chlorine-free water, underwater music, and light projections of exotic fish. Designated children's swim hours (weekdays 9-11:30am and 2-5:30pm; weekends and bank holidays 9am-5:30pm).
Roald Dahl-inspired theatrical afternoon tea with whimsical treats and eccentric presentation. Open to all guests and non-guests. Particularly good for families, but popular with adults too.
A timed pre-theatre menu at Indigo designed to get you out in time for curtain-up at nearby West End theatres. Kitchen staff are experienced at the timing and the menu is properly considered, not a dumbed-down fast version.
Live DJ, tableside Bloody Mary service, antipasti spread in the Lobby Bar followed by dinner-quality mains at Indigo and a dessert table. £75 per person, Bollinger flights as upgrade.
The hotel holds a 400-piece private collection of contemporary art and sculptures displayed throughout all public spaces and guest rooms. Original works in every room and suite. Self-guided viewing is free for guests; staff are happy to share the stories behind specific pieces.
The Lobby Bar's Gallery cocktail menu is directly inspired by specific works in the hotel's 400-piece contemporary art collection. Each drink has a corresponding artwork and story.
The hotel curates local knowledge through resident experts including silhouettist Charles Burns and cultural insider Silvia Melchior (Director of Development at the Donmar Warehouse). Staff offer genuinely local tips for galleries, boutiques, restaurants, and lesser-known spots.
