Andros
Wildest dreams eco-retreat — rustic stone architecture, all-natural materials, family community feel, digital detox by design
Book the staff transfer from Gavrio Port — the dirt road to the property is rough even in a 4WD
Why It Matters
Michelin-recognized eco-retreat with 15+ years of DIO-certified organic farming; featured by National Geographic, NY Times, Vogue, The Guardian, and Harper's Bazaar. One of the most genuinely off-grid stays in the Cyclades, inside a Natura 2000 protected wetland with a near-deserted beach at its doorstep.
Onar — Ancient Greek for 'dream' — is a family-run eco-boutique retreat on the northeast coast of Andros, set inside the EU's Natura 2000 protected Ahla wetlands. Seventeen stone houses and villas are scattered across a river valley where plane trees, wild herbs, and rare wildlife lead straight to a near-deserted crescent beach. Think hammocks over pebbled terraces, an organic farm feeding the kitchen, and an honest no-frills vibe that makes it feel more like staying with a very well-organized local family than checking into a hotel.

On Property
How you'll actually spend your days.
Boats and stand-up paddleboards available to hire directly from the retreat.
Equipment provided on-site. Sea caves accessible directly from Ahla Beach.
Hotel staff organise treasure hunts through the wetlands and impromptu football games on the beach for children.
Wooden Coco-Mat bikes available to hire for cycling the valley and surrounding island roads.
Multiple hiking routes through the Ahla Valley and surrounding protected landscape. One trail leads up to Vourkoti, Andros's highest village, with a crystal-clear lake stop en route. Hiking Route No. 6 ends at Ahla Beach.
Can be arranged by hotel staff on request. Not a standing daily activity.
Staff can organise daily excursions by Jeep to explore Andros — villages, monasteries, beaches, and museums.
Concierge team designs personalised private excursions by sea and land — coastal routes, island heritage tours, sunset journeys, and tailor-made experiences.
Guests can walk to the on-site DIO-certified organic farm to taste fresh cheese, help pick vegetables and fruit, and learn about the property's 15+ years of chemical-free growing.
A near-deserted gold-sand crescent beach at the foot of the property, book-ended by a small chapel and a lighthouse. Crystal-clear water, no crowds.
The Natura 2000 protected wetlands are home to pheasants, hares, frogs, and rare monk seals. Turtles spotted in the river. Bird watchers come specifically for the protected area's rare species.
Hosted at the beginning and end of the season (May/June and September/October) by visiting holistic centres and independent teachers. Practice in open-air settings by the pool, under plane trees, by the waterfall, or at sunrise near the lighthouse. Dates and prices vary — check with management before booking.
