Nusfjord Village & Resort
Rugged-luxury Arctic heritage. Dark timber, neutral tones, woolen blankets, crystal-clear spring water in the shower. Think honest Norwegian coastal authenticity with enough modern comfort that you don't feel like a fisherman.
Request a harbour cabin directly over the water — you can hear the tide moving under the floorboards, and it's a genuinely surreal experience
Why It Matters
One of the few places in Norway where you genuinely sleep inside a UNESCO-adjacent heritage site. The village is listed under the Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage, the rorbuer date to 1888–1900, and almost nothing about the exterior has changed. It's also a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World and listed in the Michelin Guide.
One of Norway's oldest and best-preserved fishing villages on the southern coast of the Lofoten Islands, Nusfjord is a working museum that happens to let you sleep in it. Red-painted rorbu cabins on wooden stilts line a sheltered harbour where cod fishermen once lived; today those same cabins have been carefully restored and upgraded, keeping the original timber walls and low ceilings while adding decent bathrooms and proper beds. The village has just 19 permanent residents, five protected heritage buildings, and a cod liver refinery that now backs onto an outdoor spa.

How you'll actually spend your days.
An authentic fishing excursion aboard Nusfjord's own traditional wooden fishing trawler, Elltor. The daily catch feeds into Restaurant Karoline's dinner menu.
Lofoten's famously scenic golf course, offered as a bookable activity through the resort.
Guided hike through Lofoten's steep mountain terrain, with views of fjords and coastline from above. Trails wind through unspoilt landscapes popular with sea eagle and whale watchers.
Guided kayaking through the fjords surrounding Nusfjord, with mountain and wildlife views. A calm way to explore the inlets and coastline at water level.
Self-guided or guided SUP along the coastline, including the option of midnight paddleboarding in summer when the light is continuous.
Introduction to the ancient craft of linocut printmaking, framed around Nusfjord's maritime heritage. A good indoor option for rainy or stormy days.
Guided mindfulness and meditation session in one of the historic loft spaces — a good pairing with the spa.
Guided excursion to find the best vantage points for aurora viewing in the winter months. Nusfjord's low light pollution and Arctic Circle position make it excellent northern lights territory.
High-speed RIB boat excursion combining speed with Lofoten's coastal history. Covers more ground than a kayak and gives a different perspective of the archipelago.
On-site gallery in the original building that once salted and stored fish roe for caviar production. Now hosts ever-changing exhibitions featuring Norwegian and international artists. Free to visit for guests.
For the more adventurous winter visitor — ski touring through Lofoten's white landscape when conditions allow.
Guided snowshoeing through the snow-covered village and surrounding landscape. A low-impact winter activity accessible to most fitness levels.
Year-round cold-water dip off the dock in the Norwegian Sea. Not officially guided, but available for hardy guests — particularly memorable (and bracing) in winter.
