Why It Matters
Only five rooms across a ~300sqm floor of the Palazzo Mereghi, one of the great works of Roman architect Gioacchino Ersoch. Every room has a bespoke commissioned artwork by the Studiovagante collective reinterpreting portraits of its namesake noblewoman. The whole relais can also be reserved as a single private residence.
Five rooms inside a late 19th-century palazzo on one of Rome's most prestigious addresses, designed by architects Stefano and Alessia to channel the classical elegance of the Roman nobility. Ceilings run over four metres high, hand-laid Venetian mosaic floors cover the ground, and Renaissance-style frescoes look down on every room. Each of the five spaces takes its name — and its entire decorative identity — from a different Roman noblewoman: Paolina Borghese, Donna Olimpia Pamphilj, Artemisia Gentileschi, Lucrezia Borgia, and Beatrice Cenci. This is not a large hotel. It is closer to staying inside a private noble apartment, with concierge support on hand.

Artemisia Gentileschi
The standout detail here is the circular fresco with arabesques on the ceiling, matched by a mosaic rosette directly below it on the floor — a neat architectural trick. The bathroom has glass-tile walls and a large window. The room has its own entrance hall with mosaic floor where the Nespresso station is set up. Named for the Baroque painter Artemisia Gentileschi; the contemporary re-reading of her 1638 self-portrait as Allegory of Painting (normally at Kensington Palace) hangs on the main wall.

Beatrice Cenci
A mezzanine layout with a lounge on the lower floor (sleeps one additional guest on a sleight bed) and a double bed on the upper mezzanine, connected by a staircase. The split level is part of the experience — the upper floor puts you right up close to the geometric ceiling decorations, while the lower floor is perfect for admiring the mosaic floor pattern. Arabesque marble bathroom. Suitable for a family of three. Named for the tragic Renaissance figure Beatrice Cenci; the room's artwork references Guido Reni's famous c.1600 portrait at Palazzo Barberini.

A room that leans into its proportions — mirror-framed walls amplify the 4.30m ceilings and the frescoed moulded cornicework above. The bathroom is in yellow travertine, reached through a quarter-arch that preserves the original building architecture. Includes a lounge area and writing desk. The main wall displays Studiovagante's reinterpretation of Alessandro Algardi's High-Baroque bust of Donna Olimpia Maidalchini Pamphilj, which is on show at Palazzo Doria Pamphilj.

At 50 sqm, this is the most apartment-like room in the building. A frescoed master bedroom with fireplace and double bed flows into a lounge with a sofa-bed, arched window, and vaulted ceiling, plus a convenience kitchenette. The bathroom is in Carrara marble. Good for two couples or a family. The room's commissioned artwork is a re-reading of the Portrait of Flora (Bartolomeo Veneto, 1501), said to be the true likeness of Lucrezia Borgia.

Paolina Borghese
A large double room with a relax corner that has its own fireplace and a floor-to-ceiling antiqued mirror that plays off the room's impressive symmetry. The ceiling is frescoed with grotesques and geometric patterns. Bathroom is in Portuguese pink marble. Named for Napoleon's sister and adorned with a commissioned reinterpretation of Canova's famous Pauline Bonaparte as Venus Victrix (1805–08), on show at the Borghese Gallery.
