Newhall Mains
Contemporary Highland country house with a strong aviation identity. Intimate and personal, with individually designed spaces ranging from cosy doubles to sprawling three-bedroom cottages. Tartan touches, handmade beds, and sheep wool quilts sit alongside Robert Welch cutlery and Japanese whisky. Feels like a well-heeled friend's estate rather than a hotel.
Book the wood-fired Sunday roast — it's cooked on the Argentinian asado grill in the courtyard and worth planning your whole weekend around
Why It Matters
Holds one Michelin Key. The only luxury accommodation in the UK with its own private airfield — guests can arrive cockpit-to-cottage. Run by a young pilot (Euan Ramsay) and his mother Rebecca, who restored the buildings from a classified at-risk state. Restaurant Spruce serves seasonal modern Scottish produce and is open to non-residents.
Newhall Mains is a family-run reinvention of a once-derelict 19th-century Scottish farm steading on the Black Isle peninsula, 20 miles north-east of Inverness. The red sandstone buildings have been given a full contemporary makeover — log-burning fireplaces, deep soaking tubs, underfloor heating, whimsical wallpapers — while holding onto their agricultural bones. Nine rooms in total: four hotel suites and five self-catering cottages, each named after the owner's family, sleeping up to 28 guests across the estate. The one thing that genuinely sets it apart from every other luxury property in the UK: a 630-metre private grass airstrip, right on the farm.

Intimate session in the Japanese-inspired bar, stocked with premium Highland labels and Japanese single malts. A guided exploration of some of Scotland's and Japan's best drams.
The cobbled farmyard courtyard doubles as a croquet lawn in summer, complete with mallets, hoops and wooden balls. Parasol-flanked. Staff will give beginners a rundown of the rules.
Free-to-borrow e-bicycles for exploring the Black Isle's quiet country lanes, forest tracks and coastal trails. Purpose-built mountain bike trails at nearby Learnie Red Rocks, plus a scenic shore road route from North Kessock to Redcastle past medieval fish traps and a Pictish crannog.

Up to 11 hours for the most immersive trips. Bespoke itineraries available.
Meet the estate's Highland cattle and Jacob sheep on a farm tour of the orchards, pastures and beehives. The sheep's Y-shaped horns feature in the hotel's logo; their wool is spun into the rugs and blankets in the cottages.

The hotel owner Euan Ramsay is a qualified pilot.
