Nasu-Onsen Shinshun no Kago Hewitt Resort
Modern ryokan minimalism. Forest retreat, not a flashy resort. The vibe is quiet, adult-oriented, and forest-immersive — heavy on indirect lighting, cedar and natural materials, and the meditative hiss of sulfur water.
The lounge is a genuine bar — you can order cocktails and it stocks the same local Nasu craft beer as the restaurant, but for free. Pre-load there before dinner to reduce your drinks bill (beer ¥1,200 / sake ¥2,000 per go at the table).
Why It Matters
One of the very few properties in the Nasu onsen area combining private in-room saunas, a Michelin Guide listing, and a Tablet Hotels selection — all opened in late 2024. The sulfur spring is unusually concentrated (guests literally see yellow deposits form on the tap nozzles), and the complimentary lounge doubles as a proper bar with craft cocktails and local Nasu craft beer.
Opened in November 2024, this 20-room forest ryokan sits in the hot spring village of Nasu Yumoto, about 2.5 hours from Tokyo by shinkansen. The design is clean and minimalist — high ceilings, cedar paneling, soaring glass windows that frame the surrounding trees — with every single room getting its own semi-open-air onsen fed by a milky-white sulfur spring flowing straight from the source. Select rooms also come with private saunas. Communal areas include a fireplace-warmed lounge with complimentary drinks, an art-book library stocked with Karuizawa whiskies, and a small restaurant serving seasonal Japanese course dinners built around local Nasu ingredients.
