Why It Matters
One of the Netherlands' most unusual hotel conversions: a fully intact Franciscan convent complex — five listed national monument buildings, a functioning neo-Gothic chapel, noble townhouses dating to the 14th century — all pressed into service as a 95-room luxury hotel. The chapel alone is worth the visit, now used for weddings and events with original stained glass and choir seating. Bar Belle, the restaurant opened in 2026 under a chef with three-Michelin-star experience, anchors the F&B side.
Five listed heritage buildings don't usually add up to something this cool. Hotel Nassau Breda spent centuries as a Roman Catholic orphanage and Franciscan convent before becoming a hotel in 2016 — and the designers leaned hard into that contrast. Playful nun photography and religious artifacts sit alongside contemporary furnishings, all within monumental brick walls and a 1903 neo-Gothic chapel that now doubles as an event venue. Part of Marriott's Autograph Collection as hotel #103, it's the kind of place where the architecture carries the room.
