Oakland Downtown
Edgy urban social hub. Art-forward, youth-oriented, LGBTQ+ welcoming. Think hostel energy with private bathrooms and a proper bar.
The complimentary cocktail is only one drink on arrival — don't expect an open bar all night
Why It Matters
First new hotel development in downtown Oakland in nearly 20 years. Also the first modularly constructed Moxy in the U.S. — built using factory-built wood-frame rooms that reduced construction time by 25% and are LEED certified. The building's community ties are real: artwork comes from Creative Growth (a nonprofit for artists with disabilities), and room poetry is commissioned from Chapter 510, an Oakland youth writing workshop.
Oakland's most personality-forward hotel opened in March 2021 on Telegraph Avenue, right at the gateway to the Uptown Arts and Entertainment District. The pink neon sign and a six-story aluminum art installation called 'Shapeshift Oakland' by local artist Thom Faulders mark the building from a block away. Check-in happens at the bar — cocktail in hand — and the lobby doubles as co-working space, performance stage, and rotating art gallery. Rooms are compact and deliberately so, but smartly designed with peg-wall storage, walk-in showers, and 42-inch TVs with quality sound systems.
