Monte Uzulu Boutique Hotel
Minimalist eco-luxury meets Oaxacan artisan craft. Open-plan rooms, slotted wooden doors that blur the line between inside and out, woven lamps, shadow play from jungle foliage. Slow travel, design-forward, genuinely sustainable rather than greenwashed.

Why It Matters
Michelin Guide-listed and Tablet Hotels member. Designed entirely by Mexican hands — furniture by Oaxacan carpenters, light fixtures by Sombra, basketry from Michoacán artisans, cotton textiles from Teotitlán del Valle. Name derives from the Zapotec word 'gusulú,' meaning 'the beginning.' One of the very few boutique-quality stays on this stretch of the Oaxaca coast.
Monte Uzulu sits on one of the last undeveloped hills in downtown San Agustinillo, perched above where the coastal jungle meets the Pacific. The buildings — a collaboration between architecture studio At-te and design studio Taller Lu'um — are a contemporary riff on traditional thatched-roof palapa structures, built using local hardwood, earth-pigmented cement walls, and dried palm leaves. Eleven suites, no air-conditioning, and a strong no-fuss sustainability ethos: rainwater harvesting, 100% water treatment, organic bath products, and locally sourced everything. The beach is a 5-minute walk downhill.
