Why It Matters
One of the first major luxury resort openings in Sonoma in years, and it nailed the brief: California-modern rather than faux-European, with a serious on-site wine program headed by Jesse Katz of Aperture Cellars. The bungalow layout means every room has a private entrance and direct outdoor space — no corridor hotels here.
Opened in 2021, Montage Healdsburg is California wine country luxury with zero Tuscan pretension. The resort sits on 258 acres of rolling vineyard and heritage oak groves, just a few minutes north of Healdsburg's famously charming plaza. Everything here is low-slung and dark-wood-clad, buildings bleeding into the landscape rather than announcing themselves. One-third of every room is open-air — and that's not marketing copy, that's a literal terrace with a fire pit attached to your bedroom.
