Monachyle Mhor
Eclectic Highland farmhouse chic. Think antlers and animal hides mixed with modernist rugs, Eames chairs, and bold contemporary design. Relaxed and informal — ducks still wander the cobbled courtyard, and the owners' dogs are usually around.
The restaurant is open to non-guests, but book early — weekends fill up fast
Why It Matters
One of Scotland's most food-forward boutique hotels, where the farm literally feeds the restaurant. The Lewis family has been farming here since 1983, and the hotel grew organically out of that. Chef Tom Lewis is the driving force behind the kitchen — the dinner menu changes daily based on what's available from the estate. It's also part of a wider Mhor empire that includes a roadside motel, a bakery, and a farm shop.
Monachyle Mhor is a boutique lochside hotel sitting on the Lewis family's 2,000-acre working estate in Balquhidder, deep inside Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park. What looks like a pretty pink farmhouse from the outside turns out to be something else entirely — avant-garde interiors, a seriously acclaimed restaurant, and accommodation ranging from steam-room suites to a restored 1950s showman's wagon with a wood-fired outdoor bath. The food is the main event: chef-owner Tom Lewis runs the kitchen with produce from their own sheep, cattle, pigs, kitchen garden, and foraged finds from the estate.
