Garden Hotel Kyoto Sanjo Premier
Modern Japanese design hotel with strong garden-architecture integration. Clean lines, kimono-inspired interiors, and monthly rotating displays of antique kimonos from the historic Chikiriya collection in the lobby lounge. Lively ground-floor public spaces — restaurant and sake bar draw locals — but the subterranean bath is a genuinely calm, guests-only retreat.
The private bath lounge books out fast — reserve your slot immediately after booking the room at sanjop-privatespa.resv.jp
Why It Matters
Winner of the 2025 Good Design Award. The hotel sits on historic Sanjo Dori at the cultural and commercial heart of central Kyoto, a 3-minute walk from Karasuma Oike Station. It houses Kyoto City's first on-site fresh cheese laboratory (GOOD CHEESE LABORATORY), a Bib Gourmand-recognized Italian restaurant, a rare-sake bar produced by a Kyotango brewery, a cave-like 90-sqm subterranean public bath, and a by-reservation private bath lounge — the first of its kind in the Mitsui Garden Hotels chain.
Built on land once occupied by Chikiriya, a kimono wholesaler with a 300-year history on Sanjo Street, this 185-room hotel opened in July 2024 as the first PREMIER-series Mitsui Garden Hotel in Kyoto. The design philosophy is teioku ichinyo — the oneness of garden and building — expressed through eight integrated gardens anchored by a trio of courtyards planted with willow and Japanese maple trees. The glass-walled two-story lobby lounge pulls the courtyard greenery inside, and the minimalist rooms take their color palette from traditional kimono textiles.

For 500 yen per item, guests can have luggage forwarded between this hotel and Mitsui Garden Hotel Kyoto Station — useful for arriving in Kyoto early before check-in or exploring the city hands-free on departure day. Lounge access (non-alcoholic drinks, PC) at Kyoto Station is included with the service.
The lobby lounge hosts a rotating monthly display of antique kimonos from the Chikiriya collection — a 300-year-old kimono wholesaler that once occupied this site. The pieces change each month and cycle through 12 different works across the four seasons, ranging from furisode and tomesode to maruobi belts, all rendered in techniques like Kaga yūzen, batik, and Tuzureori tapestry weaving.
