Migiwatei Ochi Kochi
Traditional Japanese ryokan with contemporary luxury finishes. The historic entrance (a restored Edo-period inn building, the original Kagotou guesthouse once beloved by Siebold and novelist Ibuse Masuji) sets the tone — heritage on the outside, custom BC Kobo furniture and Simmons mattresses on the inside. The vibe is calm, unhurried, and distinctly adult.
The two shared rental private baths (HAE and KOCHI) are free but first-come-first-served — head to the front desk immediately at check-in to secure a slot
Why It Matters
One of very few ryokan in Japan where every single room — not just the top-end suites — has its own private open-air onsen bath with unobstructed ocean views. The radium hot spring is a natural, high-quality source. The kaiseki dinners, built around fresh Seto Inland Sea seafood (especially the signature tai clay-pot rice), draw consistent praise. It's small, strict about guests (no kids), and the combination of setting, food, and water is hard to beat in western Honshu.
Migiwatei Ochi Kochi sits right on the waterfront of Tomonoura, a historic port town in Hiroshima Prefecture that partly inspired Hayao Miyazaki's Ponyo. All 17 rooms look directly out at the Seto Inland Sea — past Sensui-jima, Benten-jima, and beyond — and each has its own private open-air onsen bath on a wooden deck. It's a small, adults-only property that leans into quiet and stillness: no large public bath, no lobby bustle, just the sound of waves and very good kaiseki food.
