Why It Matters
One of Belgium's most architecturally striking hotel conversions — a medieval steward's house flanked by a contemporary glass extension, both sitting inside the grounds of Alden Biesen, a Grand Commandery heritage site. The on-site restaurant AKKO holds a 13.5/20 Gault & Millau rating. The whole property carries the Green Key sustainability certification.
A 13th-century stone building — the former Maison du Régisseur of the Alden Biesen Commandery — fused with a clean-lined glass and steel modern wing that shouldn't work together but somehow does. The result is 72 rooms, three sizeable suites, a Gault & Millau-rated gastronomic restaurant, and a proper spa with a pool, all within 150 metres of a UNESCO-listed castle. It's not in a city. That's the point.
