Makalali Private Game Reserve
Ethnic African bush retreat. Earthy, handcrafted interiors with thatched spires, Pan African ornaments, and warm communal dining culture. Not overly polished — the bush is the real draw.
River Lodge's Emtomeni camp can accommodate larger groups separately with its own dining area — useful for buyouts and corporate events.
Why It Matters
One of South Africa's first ecotourism pioneers. The reserve holds over 1,000 wild animals including the Big Five, cheetah, wild dog, giraffe, and kudu. River Lodge's raised timber 'sala' viewing decks jutting over the Makhutswi River are a genuinely special feature. The cuisine has been nominated among South Africa's top eating establishments.
Makalali sits on a 26,000-hectare Big Five conservancy in Limpopo, about five hours from Johannesburg and just west of Kruger National Park. It runs two distinct lodges: the River Lodge, a cluster of three intimate camps along the Makhutswi River, and the Main Lodge, a larger 5-star property with a striking rim-flow pool overlooking a waterhole. The original design by architect Sylvio Rech — thatched roofs built under giant riverine trees, walls clad in on-site rock, sculptured metalwork and handcrafted ceramics throughout — earned it the title of 'most innovatively designed hotel in the world' from Tattler magazine.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Twice-daily drives in open Land Rovers through the 26,000-hectare reserve. Up to 6 guests per vehicle, led by an experienced ranger. Morning drives kick off with coffee and traditional rusks; evening drives include sundowners at a scenic stop. Summer timings: 05h30–08h30 and 16h30–19h30. Winter timings: 06h30–09h30 and 15h30–18h30. Not available for children under 6 years old.
For guests with young children or those wanting full flexibility, a private vehicle with a dedicated ranger can be hired. This removes age restrictions, allows for customised start/end times, and lets you linger at sightings as long as you like.

Capacity for conferences, group dining, weddings, and gala events. Flame torches create atmosphere at night. Standard package includes welcome drinks, refreshments, and continuous tea/coffee.
An off-road sundowner gin tasting experience, available for groups of 10 or more. Weather-dependent, at an additional charge. Book through Makalali reservations.
Golf outings can be arranged at courses in Phalaborwa (~1 hour from the reserve). Guests book directly and supply their own transport; the camp manager can assist with arrangements.
