Maison Mystique Khao Yai
Eccentric European manor in the Thai highlands. Think dark-green libraries, emerald marble staircases, glass domes of preserved butterflies, and cocktails garnished with smoked botanicals. Slow-travel, artistic, deeply designed — the kind of place guests describe wanting to write a book about.
Request a room in the Celestial Lullaby concept (Moonwatcher's Companion or Odyssey to the Stars) if you want the most dramatic, photogenic interiors
Why It Matters
Listed by the Michelin Guide. One of the most visually arresting new openings in Southeast Asia in 2025. Every room is individually designed around a named narrative concept — no two spaces are alike. Founded and designed by Fearn Kate (Katechanok Cheravattana Dhadasih), a fine-arts-trained creative with no formal architecture background, which shows in the best possible way.
Maison Mystique opened in mid-2025 on a 44-rai former mango-and-lychee orchard in Ban Khao Wong, a village name that literally translates as 'surrounded by mountains.' The statuesque white manor draws immediate comparisons to Wes Anderson's Grand Budapest Hotel — bellhop-uniformed staff, symmetrical hallways in jewel tones, four-poster beds draped in velvet. Only 22 rooms and suites means it never tips into resort anonymity, and about 80 percent of the property is given over to gardens that the founders treat as seriously as the interiors.

How you'll actually spend your days.
The hotel has trained its staff in bird identification under the guidance of a former president of the Bird Conservation Society of Thailand. A Bird Guide booklet is distributed to every room for self-guided garden walks. Hundreds of butterflies and numerous bird species including kingfishers and hornbills are regularly spotted on the property.
The property attracts hundreds of butterflies daily, including rare species. Staff can share knowledge on the local flora and fauna as part of the hotel's nature-education philosophy.
The 44-rai garden complex is the hotel's centrepiece. Distinct zones include Mahogany Lane, the Roses Are Red Garden, Le Jardin Bijoux (a multi-palette garden that changes color with the seasons), the Labyrinth, Arbor Garden, the Bird of Eden grove, and a Kitchen Garden harvested daily for the restaurant. Marble statues, hidden gates, vine-draped archways, and a bridge over a pond punctuate the routes.
On select evenings, the Bibliothèque Émeraude library bar hosts live jazz sets. Classic martinis and bespoke cocktails served alongside the music.
