Maison Heler
Surrealist literary fiction meets brutalist architecture. Raw waxed concrete, pink marble, warm leather, and wood — all punctuated with cryptic symbols from Manfred's invented alphabet. The rooms feel minimal and almost Spartan in the best way; the 9th-floor mansion is all terracotta, stacked logs, and cathedral light through stained glass. Dramatic but not pretentious.

Why It Matters
Starck conceived this as a habitable novel, not just a hotel. The entire design springs from a piece of fiction he wrote — published by Allary Éditions — and every object, every door handle, every engraved wardrobe cipher exists to deepen that story. It won the Hotel Design Award 2026 in Milan and was named among the 100 most beautiful hotels in the world at the Hôtel & Lodge Awards 2026 (Architecture category). It's also the only Hilton property in France where the designer controlled absolutely everything from the ground up, from the building envelope to the espresso cups.
A surreal nine-story concrete tower in Metz's Amphithéâtre district, topped by an actual 19th-century Lorraine mansion perched in the sky. Philippe Starck designed every last detail — architecture, furniture, lighting — based on his own fictional novel about a dreamer-inventor named Manfred Heler, whose house was thrust into the air. The result is 104 rooms, two restaurants, two bars, and a rooftop that reads as a liveable work of art.
