Why It Matters
The KGB surveillance history alone makes for a good dinner story. Add architecture by Silvestrin/Salmaso, a full-sized fridge in every room, and a ground-floor restaurant (Luzii) serving modern German food from their own Brandenburg vegetable garden — and this is a genuinely distinctive address in Mitte.
A 19th-century Berlin landmark with genuinely wild bones — built in 1895 as officer housing, pressed into service as a WWI military hospital, then repurposed as a Cold War KGB telephone surveillance station before the agents slipped out overnight after the Wall fell. Now it's 73 design-forward serviced apartments, opened in 2005 and fully reinvented in 2019. London architects Silvestrin/Salmaso did the interiors: open-plan layouts, exposed stone details, custom lighting, and rain showers that feel like an editorial shoot rather than a hotel room. The vibe skews creative Berlin — fashion people, musicians, media types — but the self-check-in and kitchenette-in-every-room format means it works just as well for a two-week work trip as a weekend.
