Why It Matters
One of the oldest lodging sites in Italy — archaeological evidence places it as a hostel for pilgrims traveling to Rome for the First Jubilee in 1300. It sits inside the working Palazzone winery, one of Umbria's top wine producers, and offers guests direct access to vineyards, an Etruscan cave cellar, and estate wines at dinner.
A 13th-century stone pilgrim's inn turned seven-suite boutique hotel, sitting on the Palazzone wine estate 5km outside Orvieto. The medieval exterior — tufa arches, mullioned windows, carved columns — gives way to a jarring and entirely intentional contrast: loft-style interiors with hardwood floors, primary-colored designer furniture (think Saarinen Tulip chairs and Eames pieces), and a glass-and-iron lift. The Dubini family has owned the property for decades and produces some of Umbria's most celebrated white wines on-site.

A 3-course lunch at the Locanda paired with a vertical tasting of 4 vintages of Campo del Guardiano — the estate's flagship white. Umbrian dishes reinterpreted by the chef to showcase the wine's longevity. Minimum 4 people.
Introduction to the winery with tasting of 3 Palazzone wines. No food pairing — purely the wines.
Tour of the vineyards and cellar followed by a tasting of 4 Palazzone wines paired with a typical local products appetizer at the historic Locanda. Named for the medieval pilgrims who originally stopped here en route to Rome.
Stroll through the estate's working vineyards — an undulating patchwork of Orvieto Classico and Cabernet grapes — and watch the winemakers at work. Self-guided or as part of a tour.
Hiking trails through the chestnut forest behind the property. No guide needed — just put on good shoes.
