Why It Matters
Tablet Hotels-listed agriturismo that punches well above the typical farmhouse-stay category. The curation of antiques and textiles, the organic food ethos (homemade pasta with ancient grains, raw-milk cheeses, locally caught fish), the horses, and the sheer isolation make it a rare find in southern Tuscany. For 2026, a sixth room — the Garden Suite — has been added.
Locanda Fontelupa is a six-room agriturismo built from an ancient farmstead on 40 hectares of organic land deep in the Tuscan Maremma, roughly halfway between the Tyrrhenian coast and Monte Amiata. Wolves occasionally pass through the surrounding woodland alongside roe deer, wild boar, and porcupines — this is not the manicured Tuscany of the tourist trail. Bio-architecturally restored stone buildings house rooms filled with the owners' decades of collected antiques: Anatolian kilims, Uzbek Suzani tapestries, Berber fabrics, and Indian and Indonesian pieces alongside locally crafted Amiata chestnut furniture. The farm produces hay, olive oil, and saffron using organic methods, partly to protect the wild bee colonies that pollinate the surrounding countryside.

A standalone cottage set ~300 metres from the main farmhouse, with its own private driveway and pedestrian access. The most secluded option on the property. One large bedroom with a super king-size bed, shower bathroom, covered and furnished veranda, and a fully fenced private garden of ~350 sqm with sun beds, sun umbrella, and a hammock. Decorated with an antique Persian tapestry and a rare Anatolian carpet. Mini bar (only room with one). Medium or large dog permitted. Pool cabana included.
Super King (200x200 cm), separable to twins · 30 sqm
Deluxe Garden Room
Ground-floor room with its own independent entrance and a 25 sqm private garden furnished with a sun umbrella and table. A super king-size bed (200x200 cm) can split to twins on request. Beamed ceiling with an antique Berber tapestry. Can be connected to the adjacent room via an internal connecting door — useful for families. Pool cabana included. Small dogs permitted (must be noted at booking).

Family Suite
The largest room in the house at 58 sqm, on the first floor via external staircase. Two separate double bedrooms each with super king-size beds (200x200 cm, both separable to twins), plus one spacious bathroom. The living room is furnished with 20th-century wicker sofa and armchairs and an antique Uzbek Suzani tapestry. Good for families or two couples traveling together. Pool cabana included. Garden Suite
New for the 2026 season, this independent unit sits about 20 metres from the main farmhouse with private pedestrian access. A 35 sqm bedroom has a super king-size bed and a spacious shower bathroom; a small sitting room provides a cozy second space. Semi-covered furnished veranda of ~20 sqm and a fully fenced private garden of ~180 sqm with sun umbrella, sun bed, and hammock. Decorated with a large woven Mauritanian mat in palm leaves and leather, a wedding blanket from the Marsh al Arab people, and a small artwork by Italian artist Pietro Ruffo. Medium/large dog permitted. Pool cabana included.

Occasional cooking class evenings hosted by the chef and Giuska for all in-house guests. Must be booked in advance and depends on availability.
The property accommodates groups of up to 14 for retreats, courses, and seminars. The winter garden has modular furniture that can be configured for meetings, yoga, and similar events. Contact the property for bespoke programming.
The property keeps semi-wild horses as part of a rehabilitation project in collaboration with Equitazione Buttero Contemporaneo. On reservation, guests can observe the horses in their herd, watch their social dynamics, build a relationship of trust through grooming and care, and go for a walk with the horses. Not a conventional riding lesson — it's more about connection.
The property can arrange guided horse rides through the Maremma Natural Park with expert local guides. Booked through the locanda.
14x5m outdoor pool on the adjacent hill above the farmhouse, oriented toward the sunset with sweeping countryside views. Slightly salted water. Furnished with cabanas (one per room), sun beds, parasols, and hammocks. Seasonal (late spring through early autumn).
The locanda can arrange trekking or canoeing excursions with the local Terramare Association in the Maremma.
The surrounding woodland is home to roe deer, wild boar, porcupines, badgers, and occasional wolves. Buzzards, red kites, the short-toed eagle, barn owls, little owls, and scops owls are regularly spotted. No guided program — it happens naturally on walks across the estate.
