LILLØY LINDENBERG
Antique Scandinavian folk meets tactile eco-minimalism. Stripped timber walls, hand-painted folk headboards, ceramics by Joris-Jan Bos, glassware by Sigrid Rostad, impressionistic paintings by Axel Vindenes. Tech-free spaces. No TVs in rooms. The whole island has a working-farmhouse-meets-artist-residency energy.
Book the Ocean Room (boathouse) for the most independent experience — it has its own kitchenette and a piano overlooking the sea
Why It Matters
Named to Condé Nast Traveler's Hot List 2026. One of very few fully operable private island hotels in Norway. Strong plant-based identity without being preachy about it — the 9-course Kelp Club supper club has become a destination in itself. Member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World Considerate Collection.
Lilløy is a 3.48-hectare island off the west coast of Norway, home to a mint-green clapboard farmhouse and a two-storey boathouse — four rooms total, capacity for 10 guests. No spa wing, no infinity pool, no concierge in a blazer. What it does have: a sauna built from hand-collected shoreline stones, an outdoor hot tub, mattresses stuffed with locally harvested seaweed, a botanical library bar stocked with biodynamic wines, and a resident chef, Antje de Vries, who free-dives for the kelp she cooks with. The Bergen-based design duo Vera & Kyte spent months restoring this century-old farmhouse, ferrying materials across unruly waters, and the result feels like a home that just happens to be surrounded entirely by the North Sea.
