Owners Frédéric and Virginie Bartoli have turned Château des Hayes into a 19-room boutique hotel that runs more like a smart summer camp than a stiff country house. The regional astronomical observatory sits just 500 metres from the estate. On clear nights, guests gather by the fire pit under a very dark sky to observe planets, constellations, and galaxies.
The chestnut grove on the estate has working beehives that guests can observe during forest walks.
The estate is known for its stags, hinds, and roe deer. Reception staff will tell you where to head at dusk for the best chance of a sighting.
