Le Royal Monceau opened in 1928, saw some of Paris's most storied guests — from Josephine Baker to Ray Charles — and then closed in 2008 for a two-year gut renovation by Philippe Starck. What reopened in 2010 was genuinely different: one of only 12 hotels in Paris to hold 'Palace' distinction, and the one most committed to making art part of the actual guest experience rather than lobby wallpaper. There are 149 rooms and suites, a 1,500 sqm spa with the longest pool of any Paris palace hotel, a Michelin-starred Italian restaurant, Nobu Matsuhisa's first and only French address, and a private 99-seat cinema.
