Why It Matters
One of Bordeaux's few genuine 5-star boutique hotels. The Nuxe Spa is open to non-guests, the gastronomic restaurant Le Cercle de Montaigne draws locals, and the Montesquieu Suite — with its private elevator, cinema room with starry sky ceiling, and sauna — is genuinely one-of-a-kind in the city.
A 5-star boutique hotel in a 19th-century Bordeaux mansion, steps away from the actual Roman amphitheatre ruins the hotel is named for. The building dates to 1895 and was a private residence until 1968. Owners Christophe and Anaïs San José transformed it into a small-luxury property where old stone floors, original moldings, and varnished parquet share space with furniture by Philippe Starck, Kartell, and Eichholtz. 28 rooms and suites spread across two buildings arranged around a garden courtyard that honors three of Bordeaux's great philosophers: Montaigne, Montesquieu, and Mauriac.
