Landhotel Zum Bären
Elegant German Landhaus — parquet floors, antique furnishings, a tile oven in the restaurant, and a book-lined library dining room. Warm rather than fussy. Feels lived-in by people who care about it.
The weekly Bären Lunch (Thu–Sat) is a 3-course menu at €39 — the best value on site; current menu is always posted on Instagram first.
Why It Matters
Michelin-selected restaurant run by 8th-generation chef Joachim Buggle, who reportedly held a Michelin star. The hotel's history as a post-coach station, river tow-horse stop, and local mayor's office makes it genuinely rooted in the valley, not just decorated to look like it.
Eight generations. Same family. Same building on the Lahn river. The Buggle family has been running this place since 1827, and that continuity is the whole point. It sits right on the riverbank in the tiny village of Balduinstein — only a railway line and a road between you and the water. Ten rooms, three distinct dining spaces, and a kitchen that punches well above a three-star country inn.
