La Ferme de Georges
Rustic eco-luxury with French sensibility. Unplugged, organic, farm-to-table. No TVs, no in-room WiFi, wooden shutters over glassless windows, mosquito nets on canopy beds. The vibe is intentional slowness — this is a place people come to genuinely disconnect.
Book kite surfing lessons at least a week in advance, especially for July and August high season.
Why It Matters
Opened in 2016 by Pierre Bident Moldeva (co-founder of Chez Georges Villa in Rio), La Ferme is the most polished property in one of Brazil's most extraordinary natural settings: 1,500 sq km of white dunes studded with turquoise lagoons, featured in National Geographic. Press coverage spans Vogue, Monocle, Travel + Leisure, Le Figaro, and Lonely Planet. The Tree Lodge — an elevated wooden structure with a 360° panoramic tower — is genuinely one-of-a-kind in Brazil.
La Ferme de Georges is a French-named pousada planted firmly in the tiny fishing village of Atins, population 600, sitting right at the entrance to Lençóis Maranhenses National Park. Twelve handcrafted white-walled lodges spread across two hilly acres, built from local wood, brick, and palha (straw). The organic garden feeds the restaurant; the dunes are a 7-minute walk; and the whole place runs on a generator and solar panels because the grid here is famously unreliable.

On Property
How you'll actually spend your days.
Open-top 4x4 truck tours into Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, departing from Atins beach — a different perspective than the tourist truck routes from Barreirinhas. Local guides take guests to the lagoons.
Half-day to three-day guided treks on foot through the dunes of Lençóis Maranhenses National Park. The most ambitious option — a 70km three-day walk from Queimada dos Britos to Santo Amaro, overnighting at native houses in oases — is serious and requires physical preparation. La Ferme connects guests with trusted local guides.
Guided horseback rides across the dunes and into the national park. Can be combined with 4x4 and trekking. Half-day or full-day programs adapted to water levels in the lagoons seasonally.
Two-hour boat trip on the river and dunes to spot the region's bird life, including the scarlet ibis (guará) and white egrets. The scarlet ibis feeds exclusively on red crabs, hence its vivid color. Can be organized same-day.
Join gardener Osmar in the property's organic plantation from 6am. Depending on season, help plant rice, prepare soil, pick vegetables, water plants, or collect eggs. A genuine working farm experience, not a curated tourist activity.
Atins is one of Brazil's best kite spots — constant wind, flat water in the lagoons, and uncrowded beaches. La Ferme organizes IKO-certified individual lessons covering all equipment, for complete beginners through experts. Three days recommended to maximize progress. Book at least a week ahead, especially July–August.
SUP available on the lagoons and river around Atins, organized through La Ferme.
13x6m pool shaded by cashew trees, with pool bar, lounge chairs, a pétanque ground, and a volleyball court. The social hub of the property on hot afternoons.
