Why It Matters

La Citadelle is the real thing: a 16th-century military warehouse (Le Magasin aux Vivres) built in 1559 to supply King Henry II's garrison at Metz, converted into a 4-star boutique hotel in 2005. The building combines Jaumont stone, wood, glass, and steel, with a contemporary design palette of wenge, grey, and red — plus artwork by Paul Flickinger throughout. It sits in a green park setting at the confluence of the Moselle and Seille rivers, right between the Arsenal Concert Hall and the Governor's Palace.
