La Cheneaudière
Mountain lodge meets luxury spa retreat. Warm, cosy interiors with deep blues, greens and midnight blacks inspired by the surrounding forest. Unpretentious but polished. Family warmth without stuffiness. Feels earned rather than performative.
Book Le Feuillage when you reserve your room — only 30 covers per service and it fills fast, especially on weekends.
Why It Matters
One of France's best spa hotels outside Paris or the Riviera. The Nature-Spa — 2,500 m² across three floors with Europe's largest flotarium — is the main draw. Add one Michelin star, a Relais & Châteaux pedigree, 50+ years of family ownership, and you have a rare combination of substance across every department.
A third-generation family-run five-star Relais & Châteaux property in the Bruche Valley of Alsace, sitting at 500m in the Vosges mountains between Strasbourg and Colmar. Founded in 1974 by Arlette and Marcel François with 10 rooms, now run by Marie and Nicolas Decker with 45 rooms and a landmark 2,500 m² spa. The food is serious: Chef Jean-Paul Acker holds one Michelin star at Le Feuillage and runs a second gourmand restaurant, Le Chêne. The spa is genuinely extraordinary — Europe's largest flotarium, five saunas, a natural biotope pool filtered by mountain plants, and indoor/outdoor pools. Remote by design, this is a place people travel to specifically, not a stop-over.

Seasonal guided excursion (September–October) to observe the annual deer rutting in the state-owned forests of the Vosges mountains. A genuinely unusual experience — the sound of stags during mating season is like nothing else.

Several golf courses within driving distance, including Golf International de Soufflenheim, Golf de la Wantzenau, Golf Kempferhof, and Ammerschwihr Golf Club.
Four GPX-mapped hiking routes start directly from the hotel, ranging from a 1.8 km forest discovery trail (pushchair-friendly) to a 19 km loop through the Haute Vallée de la Bruche. Maps downloadable via free app (Osmand). The hotel team provides technical advice.

Also includes a cafeteria break station and recreation area with table football and arcade. Bookable Sunday through Thursday evening.
An evening tasting session in the hotel's wine library guided by the hotel's sommeliers.
