La Bandita Townhouse
Medieval soul meets low-key cosmopolitan. Relaxed and genuinely stylish without trying too hard. Vinyl LPs on the shelves, Ortigia toiletries in the bathroom, Illy espresso in every room. The kind of place where the owner's story is part of the product.

Why It Matters
The building is a rambling Renaissance-era palazzo where nuns lived for over 500 years, renovated without adding a single square meter of new space. The Townhouse Caffè is one of the most popular restaurants in Pienza in its own right. Pienza itself is a UNESCO World Heritage site and arguably the most concentrated hit of archetypal Tuscan scenery — the Val d'Orcia — anywhere in the region.
A 12-room boutique hotel carved out of a 15th-century former nuns' convent smack in the middle of Pienza's cobblestone historic center. Owner John Voigtmann — former Sony music exec who spent his career on the road with the Strokes, Foo Fighters, and Christina Aguilera — traded rock tours for Tuscan village life and the result is exactly as cool as that résumé implies. Florentine architects Ernesto Bartolini and Arianna Pieri stripped back centuries of plaster to expose original stone walls and beams; the rooms feel like loft apartments that happen to be 500 years old.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Each evening, the library bar opens for aperitivo with complimentary bottles of wine chilled and ready. A natural gathering point for guests to meet over prosecco and local snacks.
Reserve seats at the chef's counter in the Townhouse Caffè to watch the kitchen team work from the open kitchen, from prep through plating. A particularly good option for food-focused guests.
Full-time English-speaking concierge team can arrange wine tours to Montepulciano and Montalcino, visits to local cheese farms (Cugisi), vineyard tours, cooking classes, and day trips to Siena, Montefollonico, and other nearby hill towns.
A walled medieval garden split into two sections: one is dedicated to outdoor dining for the Townhouse Caffè, the other is exclusively for hotel guests. Canvas chairs, total quiet despite being in the village center. One of the rare genuinely private outdoor spaces in central Pienza.
The hotel has a curated walking route through the Val d'Orcia available via Komoot (Design Hotels partnership). Concierge can also arrange custom hikes and excursions into the surrounding countryside.
A well-stocked library/bar on the first floor with an extensive vinyl LP collection curated by owner John Voigtmann — a reflection of his former life as a music industry executive. Guest can browse records, books, and an in-room mini guidebook to the region penned with insider knowledge.
