Why It Matters
Awarded 1st prize as 'Newcomer in Europe' by GEO Magazine shortly after opening. Listed on both Michelin Guide and Tablet Hotels. The hotel has no reception desk, no hotel sign, and no anonymous corridors — guests help themselves from the fridge and choose their own wine from the cellar. Every one of the 15 rooms has a fully realised theme, curated by Christiane Lösch with an architect, down to the DVDs and CDs matching the room's concept.
Opened in 2011, Lösch für Freunde is a 15-room designer country house hotel that deliberately doesn't feel like a hotel. No sign on the door — just a doorbell, as if you're visiting a friend. The whole concept pivots around an open kitchen and long communal dining tables where guests gather twice daily for market-fresh, four-course meals. Hosts Edelbert and Christiane Lösch created every one of the 15 individually themed rooms — each named after a friend, family member, or obsessive personality type — with the architect. It sits about 300 metres from the thousand-year-old Kloster Hornbach monastery and about 2 km from the French border.

The nightly four-course communal dinner at the long kitchen table is itself an activity. Guests share a meal, the chef cooks in view, conversation flows. Often the highlight of stays.
Bike rental available at the hotel. The Palatinate Forest and surrounding countryside are popular for cycling.
The Palatinate Forest directly surrounds Hornbach. Well-marked trails through fields and woodland start practically from the hotel door.
The hotel is 2 km from the French border. Bitche (20 km) and its citadel, the Alsace wine route, and the Vosges mountains are all within easy reach for day excursions.
Zweibrücken is 15 minutes by car: the Outlet Centre for shopping and the Rosengarten for a stroll.
Book the entire Lösch für Freunde — all 15 rooms, all communal spaces (kitchen, wine lounge, tobacco lounge, garden, Skydeck Spa) — for private groups, weddings, corporate off-sites, or family gatherings. A registry office and chapel are right next door for weddings.
An excellent 18-hole golf course is accessible from the hotel. Not on-site, but frequently recommended by the property.
The thousand-year-old Kloster Hornbach monastery — and its affiliated hotel — is a 1-minute walk (300 metres) from Lösch für Freunde. The church of St Fabian and the Romanesque ruins are right next door.
