L'Iglesia El Jadida
Retro-eclectic: 1930s–1950s Art Deco meets Moroccan antique bazaar. Portuguese-Moroccan design fusion — smooth blue-and-white tile and elegant chandeliers alongside carved wooden lattices, arched doorways, and stucco walls. The kind of place that feels like a very stylish time-travel film set.
Specifically request which building you want to sleep in at booking time — church rooms are atmospheric but can be damp; Capitainerie rooms are more comfortable and have the restaurant downstairs
Why It Matters
El Jadida's first boutique hotel, and still the best. It occupies two genuinely historic buildings inside a UNESCO World Heritage site — a converted Spanish/Catholic church and the former American consulate — decorated with individual antique finds from across Morocco. There is nowhere else quite like it on Morocco's Atlantic coast.
A 14-room boutique hotel set inside a restored Catholic church right on the ramparts of El Jadida's UNESCO-listed Cité Portugaise. Opened in 2012, it spreads across two historic buildings: the church itself (where the nave doubles as a lounge-bar) and La Capitainerie, the former American consulate next door. The aesthetic is genuinely strange and wonderful — Art Deco furniture, vintage radios, ornate Moroccan lanterns, hand-embroidered linens, and Barcelona chairs sitting under glass chandeliers in a 19th-century church. It works.
