Why It Matters

Built in 1926 and standing directly on La Baule's famous sandy beach, L'Hermitage is a grand Belle Époque landmark with half-timbered facades and steep slate roofs that look straight out of another era. The 200 recently renovated rooms are done up in sea blues and sandy whites with Breton-inspired decor — understated and genuinely elegant. It's a proper seaside grand hotel, the kind where Édith Piaf and Maurice Chevalier once stayed, and the place still carries that weight without feeling stuffy about it.
