Book a room facing Place Napoléon Bonaparte for direct views of the château — worth the upgrade

Why It Matters

One of the only hotels in France with a private door directly into a UNESCO World Heritage Site (the Jardin de Diane at the Château de Fontainebleau). Built in 1500, operating as a hotel since 1764. The signature M Moment — a private tour of the Jeu de Paume Hall built in 1601, followed by a Real Tennis lesson with the resident master paumier — is the kind of experience you can't replicate anywhere else. Green Key eco-label holder since 2025.

A 16th-century private mansion built in 1500 by Cardinal Jean Bertrand that became a tourist hotel in 1764 — and hasn't lost its nerve since. It sits directly across from the Château de Fontainebleau, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with a private access gate through the Jardin de Diane that feels genuinely special. The 2020–2021 renovation by ABP Architectes leaned hard into Second Empire French neoclassicism: deep jewel tones, Zuber tapestries, marble, brass, velvet, and a wall of broken antique plates in the dining room that manages to be both odd and charming. Fifty-six rooms spread over four floors, each different from the last, and 40 minutes by train from Paris Gare de Lyon.
