Ulleungdo
Futurist architecture meets Korean spiritual wellness. Minimalist interiors, dramatic cliff-edge setting, rituals woven into every part of the stay — from wood-smoke purification on arrival to Five Elements tasting menus. Serious about design and serious about healing; this isn't a standard luxury resort.
Ferry cancellations due to weather are common; the hotel offers free cancellation if this happens on your travel day
Why It Matters
Designed by Kim Chan-joong (The System Lab), who was invited to the 10th Venice Architecture Biennale. The building won IDEA's Environmental Silver Award for its integration with the landscape. Ultra-high-performance concrete was required to withstand the island's brutal salt air and wind. Villa Kosmos alone — the crown jewel — is phone-reservation-only, with a dedicated butler, private chef, driver, and guide.
KOSMOS Ulleungdo sits on a volcanic cliff on Ulleungdo, a remote island off Korea's east coast that takes a three-hour ferry to reach. Architect Kim Chan-joong designed it as a vessel for energy rather than a conventional building — the result is a compound of curves, spirals, and domes that looks like something between a space-age observatory and a temple. Three distinct villas (Kosmos, Sommet, Terre) each have a different architectural identity rooted in Yin-Yang philosophy and the Five Elements, and the whole operation is built around a concept called 'Cyclical Co-Prosperity': purifying guests of negative energy and restoring them with the island's natural forces.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Nightly fire pit experience from 20:00–22:00. Guests light fires under the moon reflected off Songgotsan Mountain — a ritual drawn from the Korean tradition of 'Daljip-sareugi', burning the moon house for personal wishes and success. S'mores kits available from the bar lounge. One of the resort's most atmospheric evening rituals.
Cliff-edge infinity pool at Villa Sommet B1, filled with naturally filtered Chusan Spring water aged 31 years underground. Three daily sessions: 10:00–12:00 (09:00–12:00 in July/August), 13:00–17:00, and 17:30–21:00. Closed November through March. Private cabanas available for an additional fee (reservation required at the B1 reception). Sunbeds are first-come, first-served. Free for Villa Sommet guests; Villa Terre guests may use during the second session only.
The 'Yang Ring' — a sculptural seating element within the Villa Kosmos architecture — positioned to frame both the sunrise and sunset over the island. Used for morning and evening meditation as part of the 'Metal Element Journey'. One of the subtle architectural details that doubles as a wellness tool.
Year-round outdoor sauna operating in three sessions aligned with the infinity pool schedule. Designed for releasing negative energy and restoring physical/mental balance. Free for Villa Sommet guests.
In-room private jacuzzi filled with Chusan Spring 'yongchulsu' — the island's naturally pressurized groundwater, rich in sodium, calcium, magnesium, fluoride, and silica, filtered through the volcanic bedrock over 31 years. Available in Villa Sommet rooms.
The jagged Songgotsan (Awl Peak) directly behind the resort features five legendary holes said to have been bored by the Jade Emperor while fishing for souls to take to the heavens. Guests are guided to find them as part of the resort's 'Fire Element Journey'. Hiking the surrounding trails is one of the main outdoor activities in the area.
All arriving guests receive a traditional welcome ritual: a wood-smoke purification ceremony in the room (burning aromatic wood to cleanse negative energy), a welcome tea ceremony with Ulleungdo-sourced snacks, and a gift of Five Elements (Ohaeng) pendant — symbolic of fortune and prosperity. This is not optional; it's the designed arrival sequence.
