Korakia Pensione
Moroccan-Mediterranean bohemian historic retreat. Whitewashed walls, arched doorways, lantern-lit courtyards, fountains, and bougainvillea everywhere. Romantic and quietly theatrical — the staff light over 100 candles every evening.
Ask for a Moroccan-side room if you want the authentic 1924 courtyard fountain experience; opt for the Mediterranean side for more direct pool access and the Naish House suite if budget allows.
Why It Matters
Michelin Guide listed. Vogue called it 'one of a kind.' The New York Times named it 'One of the Sexiest Hotels in America.' Travel + Leisure dubbed the Mediterranean pool 'one of the sexiest pools in the world.' The property has hosted Rudolph Valentino, Errol Flynn, and John Lavery. It's the rare Palm Springs property with zero Modernism — a deliberate, fully realized alternative universe.
Built in 1924 as a Moroccan hideaway by Scottish painter Gordon Coutts — who called it Dar Marroc and wanted to recreate his life in Tangier — Korakia Pensione is the anti-Palm Springs Palm Springs hotel. No Mid-Century Modern furniture, no kidney-shaped pool, no neon. What you get instead is a 1.5-acre adults-only petite resort spread across two lovingly restored historic villas: the original Moroccan villa and a 1930s Mediterranean villa once owned by silent screen star J. Carrol Naish. All 28 rooms have proper names, not numbers, and each is individually designed with antique and handmade furniture, stone baths, wood-beam ceilings, and a turntable stocked with vinyl.
