Why It Matters

Michelin Guide Hotel Selection 2025. One of the few inns in Japan built entirely around audiophile listening — each of the four rooms is equipped with a different set of legendary vintage speakers (JBL Paragon, Sonus Faber Lumina, Tannoy Monitor Gold, ALTEC A5) paired with period-correct amplifiers. The hot spring is an isotonic sodium-chloride source, considered one of the rarest spring types in Japan. The property also uses spent cooking oil as biomass fuel for its boiler system.

Kohanyu is a four-room adults-only inn on the shore of the Monobe River in the mountains of northeastern Kochi Prefecture. The concept revolves around three obsessions: a rare isotonic natural hot spring, organic Satoyama cuisine grown on-site, and some of the finest vintage audio equipment in Japan. Every room has its own private open-air hot spring bath and a purpose-built listening space tuned to a specific legendary speaker system. Dinner and breakfast are included in the rate, and the property accepts no more than four groups per night.

Where You'll Stay

4 room types available

ALTEC (アルテック)
Twin Room

ALTEC (アルテック)

Originally the owner's personal listening room, converted into the property's fourth guest room. The smallest at 57 sqm but arguably the most acoustically obsessive. Built with Tsuga (Japanese hemlock) wood — a sacred shrine timber prized for its resonant hardness — throughout the ceiling and walls, plus Daiken sound-absorbing panels. The ALTEC 1568A vacuum tube amplifiers (Altec Lansing, made in 1957, USA) drive ALTEC A5 'Voice of the Theatre' speakers originally used in American cinemas in the 1960s. The result is a 3D sound field described by the property as being able to 'see' the music. Private open-air hot spring bath and wood deck.

McIntosh (マッキントッシュ)
Suite

McIntosh (マッキントッシュ)

A 75 sqm suite at the front of the Monobe River, described as the most secluded room. The walls and ceilings are lined with a custom-made washi paper developed in collaboration with Tosa craftsman Rogier Uitenboogaart — made from organically grown kozo (paper mulberry), organic cotton, and Shimanto River spring water. The perforated board panels absorb low-frequency sound, giving the Tannoy Monitor Gold speakers and McIntosh MC-240 tube amplifier a distinct, room-filling clarity. Hollywood twin beds. Private wood deck and open-air hot spring bath.

Paragon (パラゴン)
Maisonette Suite

Paragon (パラゴン)

The flagship room and the only maisonette-style suite at Kohanyu. The ground floor is dominated by a dedicated listening room built around the legendary JBL Paragon speaker — a 2.63-metre-wide, 300kg sculpted wood monument driven by a McIntosh MC-275 tube amplifier. A sunroom with mini-bar and chairs sits adjacent. The private open-air hot spring bath is also on the ground floor. Up the internal staircase, the second floor holds the bedroom overlooking the lake from the highest vantage point on the property — Hollywood twin beds and a legless sofa for easy lounging.

Western (ウェスタン)
Suite

Western (ウェスタン)

The largest room at 103 sqm, designed as a whole private villa. The music room features custom-built furniture with Sonus Faber Lumina speakers embedded inside, driven by the UESUGI U-BROS 300 amplifier loaded with WE300B vacuum tubes from 1972. The speaker placement was calculated to visually 'float' over the line of the Monobe River horizon through the window. A tatami section with twin beds adjoins the music room. Outside: a private garden, open terrace, and private open-air hot spring bath with sky and river views.
