kleiner Löwe – Stadthotel Bregenz
Architecture-forward, owner-operated, understated minimalism. Think curated rather than designed-within-an-inch-of-its-life. Warm without being fussy. Owners Lisa and Johannes live in the building, which shows.

Why It Matters
Designed by Herzog & de Meuron — the same architects behind the Tate Modern and the Kunsthaus Bregenz directly across the square. Won Monocle's Best New Hotel 2025. Only eight rooms in a building with a 500-year history, reopened after a 2013 fire. Owners live on-site and run it with genuine personal warmth.
Eight rooms. One Herzog & de Meuron building. That's the whole story at kleiner Löwe, and somehow it's enough. Journalist Lisa Rümmele and entrepreneur Johannes Glatz bought a fire-damaged historic building on Kornmarktplatz in 2013, commissioned the Swiss starchitects to rebuild it, and opened in summer 2024. The result is a five-story, 8-metre-wide sliver of a hotel where Jugendstil arches meet a contemporary barrel-vault roof — and where guests share the ground-floor zinc bar with locals. Monocle named it Best New Hotel in the world for 2025.

Kornmarktplatz is Bregenz's cultural epicentre. Kunsthaus Bregenz (also Herzog & de Meuron) is directly on the square. The Vorarlberg Museum by Cukrowicz Nachbaur Architekten and the Vorarlberger Landestheater are all steps away. The hotel staff will point guests to the best spots.
The hotel secures a small allocation of well-positioned tickets to the famous Bregenz Festival floating-stage productions for hotel guests. The 2025 production is La Traviata (sold out publicly). Available dates include Sundays August 2 and August 16. Book your room and the hotel handles the tickets. The festival stage is just a few minutes' walk away.
Bregenz's local mountain Pfänder is on the doorstep with numerous hiking and biking paths. A cable car from town runs to the summit for panoramic Alpine and lake views.
The lake shore is a two-minute walk from the hotel. Swimming, lakeside cycling routes, walking promenades and boat trips are all easily accessible on foot.
Ten-minute walk from the hotel to a lakeside wellness facility with sauna on the water and direct lake access. The hotel's wellness package includes wristband admission to the sauna area, bathrobe, slippers, organic toiletries, and tea on return.
