Kikka Hirado
Ultra-modern Japanese boutique. Minimal and intentional. The architecture is clean and contemporary, the furniture is designer-grade, and the whole property quietly signals that you're here to slow down, not to be entertained.
Book the sauna slot first thing on arrival — it's first-come-first-served and the sunrise or sunset slots (6:00-7:00 AM or 17:30-18:30) are the most coveted
Why It Matters
One of very few ultra-modern small hotels in rural Kyushu. Featured in both the Michelin Guide and Tablet Hotels. Designed by Tatsuro Sasaki Architects and built on the site of the former Matsura Clan villa. The combination of ocean-view sauna, seasonal kaiseki-influenced dining, live violin at dinner, and morning zazen with a local monk makes it genuinely one-of-a-kind.
Five rooms. That's it. Kikka Hirado is a razor-focused boutique hotel on Hirado Island — a former Dutch and Portuguese trading hub in Nagasaki Prefecture — built on the grounds of a Matsura feudal lord's villa next to Umegayatsu Kairakuen Garden. Designed by Tatsuro Sasaki Architects, it's decidedly modern, not a ryokan, and the restraint is the point: no TVs, no clocks, no distractions — just floor-to-ceiling windows with the East China Sea filling the frame.

On Property
How you'll actually spend your days.
A violinist performs live during dinner service — a nod to Hirado's centuries-old cultural exchange with Europe. Included with the standard dinner plan.
Each morning, a monk from a nearby Zen temple leads a zazen (seated meditation) session for guests. It's bookable and done by reservation — not guaranteed unless you request it. One of the most memorable and distinctive experiences the hotel offers.
Private sauna sessions on a wooden deck overlooking the ocean. Swimsuits required (free rental available). Ice bathing included. One slot per room per stay, first-come-first-served. Six daily time slots.
Paid private shuttle in a Toyota Alphard (capacity 6). Available from Fukuoka Airport, Nagasaki Airport, or equivalent distances (¥80,000 per group), or from Sasebo Station (¥35,000). Book directly with the hotel.
Binoculars and a star chart are available as request amenities from the hotel. The remote location means genuinely dark skies over the East China Sea.
