Why It Matters

Bulgaria's Bansko isn't St. Moritz, and everyone here knows it. But the Kempinski Grand Arena holds a trump card nobody else in town can match: it's the only ski-in/ski-out hotel in Bansko, planted literally across the street from the Gondola station that opens onto 75 km of slopes. Opened in 2005 and now the most-awarded five-star hotel in Bulgaria, it pairs alpine-design rooms with a sprawling 1,200 sq m spa that has won the World Spa Awards title for Bulgaria's Best Hotel Spa. Rates that would barely cover a youth hostel bunk in Verbier make the value equation hard to argue with.

Two square metres bigger than the Deluxe and with the key perk: direct-floor access to Kempinski The Spa. Mountain views, king bed, and a dedicated Lavazza coffee machine in-room rather than just a kettle. The spa access alone makes this worth considering if wellness is a priority.

Four former Junior Suites knocked together to create 240 sq m on the fifth floor. Two bedrooms, a living room of roughly 100 sq m with remote-operated fireplace, dining area, bar corner, 50-inch TV, and a conference setup for 10 people. The master bathroom is Italian stone with marble sinks, a Jacuzzi, and its own 32-inch TV. Private keycard-only elevator access. Sleeps 4 adults plus 2 children under 12. This is where the ski team head coaches stay.
