Karawan Riad
Haute-palatial caravanserai. Dark, richly layered interiors — Persian rugs, Berber wardrobes, neon calligraphy, vintage maps. Very romantic, very design-forward. Not a whitewashed minimalist riad.
No private parking — use the Bab Jdid-Rcif public parking lot at the medina entrance (40 MAD/day, about $4). Have your luggage carried in by a porter.
Why It Matters
One of the few riads in Fez to earn a Michelin Key. Built inside an actual 17th-century harem palace — the Maqfia — that was once the most important in the Andalous quarter. A decade-long restoration by forward-thinking French owners brought it back without sanitising any of the grandeur. Every suite tells a different caravan-route story, named after winds from Dzhari to Harmattan.
A 17th-century palace that once served as the grandest harem in Fez's Andalusian quarter. The French owners spent a decade restoring it using the same materials and techniques as the original — hand-crafted zellije tiles, wrought ironwork, filigreed lanterns, silk embroidery — then layered in antiques and artefacts gathered from caravan routes across Morocco and sub-Saharan Africa. The result is seven (and growing) individually designed suites, a bistronomic restaurant, and a proper Ottoman-style hammam spa. It holds 1 Michelin Key for 2025.
