Why It Matters

A late 18th-century stone mansion that survived the 1820 fire that razed most of Ioannina — and it looks like it. Heavy wooden doors, brick archways, ornate fireplaces, and original tile flooring are all intact. The nine rooms each bear the name of an Epirus benefactor and layer in exposed stone walls, wood-beamed ceilings, antique velvet loveseats, and hand-painted wall panels. But Nespresso machines, Jacuzzi bathrooms, and 43-inch smart TVs keep things from tipping into museum territory.
