Kaav Safari Lodge, Kabini
Jungle-luxe minimalism. No corporate polish, no marble lobbies. Raw elemental luxury where native reforestation surrounds the property, over 90% of staff come from local villages, and the daily menu changes with whatever's growing nearby. The pool sits under an ancient banyan tree.

Why It Matters
One of very few lodges sitting directly on the Nagarhole Tiger Reserve boundary in Kabini — not just nearby, but on the edge. The lodge was built with a conservation-first mindset: developed on an existing structure's foundations, reforested with native species, and part of Rare India's community of conscious luxury properties. With only seven accommodations total, you genuinely have the place almost to yourself.
Kaav is a seven-accommodation boutique safari lodge sitting right on the boundary of Nagarhole Tiger Reserve, built on the repurposed bones of an old forest guest house. Co-founded by architect Tony Joseph and agriculturist Sanjay Pothen, the design philosophy is simple: hold back and let the forest lead. Think four chamber rooms, two stilted luxury tents with freestanding bathtubs, and a private pool villa named after Kabini's elusive black panther — all within earshot of elephant herds and alarm calls from the jungle.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Over 300 bird species recorded in Kabini Forest including endemic species like the Malabar Pied Hornbill, Nilgiri Flycatcher, and Malabar Parakeet. Migratory visitors include bar-headed geese and Eurasian spoonbills. The viewing deck is a go-to spot for early morning sessions.
A guided on-property micro-nature walk conducted daily by the in-house naturalist. Focuses on insects, spiders, butterflies, and other small denizens often overlooked on big-game safaris. Included in most stay packages.
A guided pre-sunrise trek toward the Kerala border into Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary. Dense forest gives way to open ridges with panoramic views across the Western Ghats. Not a casual walk — set off before dawn.
Traditional round coracle boats and kayaks on the Kabini River. Quiet and close to the water's surface — excellent for bird observation and a completely different perspective on the landscape than a jeep or boat safari. Kayaking available on request.
Ride through village roads and along the forest edge on cycles provided by the lodge. Covers ground faster than a walk and lets you set your own pace. The lodge provides cycles for local use as part of packages.
Dark skies above the Kabini forest make for exceptional stargazing. Far enough from any urban light pollution that constellations are genuinely visible. Can be combined with evening campfire dinners.
A guided stroll through local Kabini villages with a local guide. Passes open fields, kitchen gardens, local temples, palm-fibre craft workshops, and a tribal settlement. Winds down to the riverside. A genuine window into the community that makes up 90%+ of Kaav's own staff.
An evening session at dusk led by the in-house naturalist — recent sightings, forest ecology stories, and species insights. Good preparation for the following morning's safari.
Morning and evening safaris into Nagarhole Tiger Reserve by open-air jeep, canter van, or boat along the Kabini backwaters. Boat safaris run along the river that divides Nagarhole from Bandipur, offering dual-park viewing in a single outing. Sessions run 06:00–09:00 and 15:30–18:00. Safari seats are allocated by the Karnataka Forest Department — availability not guaranteed.
