Itsukushima Iroha
Modern Japanese ryokan meets Scandinavian design. Quiet, privacy-focused, intimate. High-craft materials everywhere — cedar wickerwork ceilings, Goemonburo cast-iron baths, hand-plastered stucco — but also Dyson hairdryers and Miele washing machines in the suites.

Why It Matters
One of the few properties on Miyajima Island that fully commits to both Japanese artisan craftsmanship and international design pedigree under one roof. The rooftop public bath overlooks the Grand Torii Gate directly. Founded 1867, completely reimagined in 2024.
Rooted in 1867 as Higashiya Ryokan, this is Miyajima's most design-forward place to sleep. The building sits on Omotesando Avenue — a five-minute walk from the Itsukushima Shrine — and most rooms look out at either the Seto Inland Sea (and the iconic floating torii gate) or the forested slopes of Mt. Misen. Inside, it's a deliberate collision of Japanese craft and Nordic modernism: handmade stucco walls and Tokoname-ware tiles share space with Finn Juhl sofas and Fritz Hansen pieces. The latest full renewal wrapped in March 2024.

How you'll actually spend your days.
The property has concierges specializing in Miyajima sightseeing, food recommendations, and English-language assistance. They can arrange reservations, activities, and personalized itineraries. Private guide arrangements for Itsukushima Shrine and Mt. Misen are also available.
The UNESCO World Heritage Site and its famous floating torii gate is a 5–10 minute walk from the property. The gate looks entirely different at high tide vs. low tide. Property staff can advise on optimal tide timing for visits.
The ropeway station is about a 20-minute walk from the property. Takes guests near the 535-meter summit of sacred Mt. Misen, with a further 30-minute hike to the peak. Views cover Miyajima and the full sweep of the Seto Inland Sea.
A patio furnished with Bodil Kjær furniture around a central fire pit. Available for private parties and events. Equipped with a private kitchen and BBQ grill. Mood shifts significantly between daytime and evening.
Open-air and indoor baths on the 5th floor with direct views of the Grand Torii Gate and Seto Inland Sea. The best time is around sunset when the light turns the torii orange-red. Note: Closed for renovation from November 19, 2025.
