Hacienda Urubamba
Eco-luxury Andean hacienda with a real conservation soul. Colonial furniture, authentic Inca masks, and handcrafted woodwork sit alongside heated floors, down duvets, and iPads. The look is unpretentious but the details are high-end. It feels more like a working estate than a resort.

Why It Matters
Inkaterra is one of Peru's pioneer eco-luxury brands, and the Hacienda Urubamba is its Sacred Valley flagship. The on-site organic farm supplies the kitchen with zero-carbon produce, and the Mayu Spa's Healing Garden recovers ancestral Andean plants. The property's own organic black tea won the Medaille Gourmet Gold in 2023 and a silver at the 2024 Teas of the World Awards — something no other hotel in the Valley can claim.
A 5-star hacienda spread across roughly 100 acres of the Sacred Valley, planted at Km 63 on the highway between Cusco and Machu Picchu. Every room — whether inside the main Casa Hacienda or one of the 24 freestanding casitas — looks out directly over green mountain slopes and working agricultural fields. Here is the thing that separates it from other luxury properties in the Valley: the farm is genuinely operational. Oxen, not tractors, till the land using zero-carbon methods, and what grows there feeds the restaurant.

On Property
How you'll actually spend your days.
Birdwatching along the hotel's various trails, covering a range of species from hawks to hummingbirds. A guide explains how the birds interact with the ecosystem. Good for casual birders and photographers as well as serious listers.
A hillside walk up Huasi Challa — which translates as 'house of the viewer' — for the best panoramic lookout over the village of Huayoccari and the surrounding Sacred Valley. The trail also passes medicinal plants and birdwatching spots.
Hands-on preparation of the ancestral Chicha de Jora beverage — the sacred Inca fermented corn drink. Guests participate in harvesting, grinding, fermenting, and finally tasting their own batch. One of the most authentic cultural experiences on offer at the property.
A full-day trek starting at Chinchero, ascending to Abra Pukaj'asa at 4,200m, then descending to the Inca ruins of Huchuy Qosqo and down into Lamay. Strenuous but rewarding — serious archaeology with serious altitude.
Drive up to Chinchero (the 'Rainbow City') and walk 8 km downhill along a genuine Inca trail through to the community of Urquillos. Good mix of birdwatching, medicinal plants, and archaeological scenery as you descend into the valley.
A guided visit to the Inkariy Museum, covering 8 of the most representative Inca and pre-Inca cultures in Peru. Good for families and anyone wanting to contextualise the archaeology they'll see throughout the Sacred Valley.
An easy Andean picnic with panoramic views over the Huaypo Lagoon, including drinks. Good for families and guests who want nature without the exertion.
A guided walk at sunset along the property's trails. The guide covers Andean astronomy and the significance of celestial observation in Inca culture — the kind of context that makes sunset feel meaningful rather than just pretty.
A challenging 3-hour hike to a high-altitude lake, with excellent birdwatching, landscape variety, and habitat changes en route. Difficulty level IV — not for the faint-hearted, but the birding and scenery at the lake are the reward.
