Iki Retreat
Quiet luxury Japanese ryokan with modern minimalist design. Deliberately slow, deeply local. The kind of place where the pace drops within an hour of arrival and never picks back up.
Book direct on the official site to receive a complimentary private hot spring session (45 minutes, normally ¥5,500)
Why It Matters
The only Michelin 5 Pavilion ryokan on a remote island — rated in the Michelin Guide Fukuoka, Saga, Nagasaki 2019 Special Edition. The hot spring itself is remarkable: ultra-high mineral concentration (approximately 17 times the standard threshold), free-flowing at 69°C, and certified as a National Health Hot Spring — one of only three such designations in all of Kyushu. Yunomoto Bay also ranks among Japan's 100 best sunset views.
IKI RETREAT by Onko Chishin sits on the edge of Yunomoto Bay on Iki Island — a small island off Nagasaki that the Japanese have treated as sacred ground for over a millennium (it has more than 1,000 shrines). All 12 rooms face the Genkai Sea, every single one equipped with a private outdoor onsen bath fed by a 1,700-year-old golden hot spring. The design leans hard into minimalism: natural wood tones, plank beds, low furnishings, floor-to-ceiling windows. Dinner is a kaiseki affair under Executive Chef Seiichi Ota, whose cooking stays rooted in Iki ingredients — local sea urchin, abalone, Iki beef, and whatever the Genkai Sea gives up that day.
